There are several terminologies that, if you’re not in the paving business, could sound fairly foreign to you. To assist you in better understanding what our concrete paving firm does, we have provided a glossary of terminology with definitions.
Aggregate
a substance used as a foundation for concrete that is made of gravel, sand, and crushed stone.
Alligatoring
when there are several cracks in a single section of asphalt. Typically, the area resembles an alligator’s skin.
Asphalt is a naturally occurring liquid that is used as a surface material when combined with sand or gravel.
Base
the components put in place for a paved area after the subgrade but before the asphalt. Sand, gravel, or crushed stone can all be used as bases.
Failure at Base
When the base material is no longer able to support the weight of a building or vehicle, this happens. Asphalt-like holes can be seen where bases have failed.
Blacktop
a different term for asphalt.
Compaction
whenever soil, sand, or similar base material is further compacted using a piece of machinery.
Concrete
A fluid substance comprised of cement, sand, gravel, and water that dries to form a stone.

Efflorescence
a white powdery buildup on soil or rocks. Efflorescence happens when mineral-rich water rises to the surface and subsequently evaporates, and it typically occurs in dry areas.
Emulsion
mixing components together that you wouldn’t ordinarily mix. For instance, an asphalt emulsion is made by combining water and asphalt with an emulsifying agent.
Filler
A substance that is injected into cracks to fill them but does not necessarily seal them is called a filler.
Ice Heave
Pavers float upward when water collects between and beneath them, freezes, expands, and then thaws. The term for this is frost heave.
Sand Stabilizer for Joints
a liquid that is poured into joint sand to stabilize it and stop weed or moss development as well as water seepage and loosening.
Laydown
using a paving machine to spread the heated asphalt out.
Patching
the procedure of removing a portion of worn-out pavement and putting in a new one.
Pavers
Paving components that can be found in a wide range of sizes, forms, and materials (including stone, rubber, brick, concrete, and more).
Brick Splitter
an instrument for tearing up the old pavement. can be manually, mechanically, or hydraulically assisted.
Primer
a covering that improves the adhesion of the asphalt to the base while sealing the subgrade and base components.
Screeding
sand bedding leveling with the aid of wooden or metal tools.
Sealant
a liquid substance that coats asphalt to shield it and bring out its natural color.
Sealcoat
the procedure of sealing asphalt with a sealer.
Subgrade
the ready soil that will sustain a fresh patch of pavement.
