Drive through the older neighborhoods in San Antonio, the ones built in the 80s and 90s with Spanish or Mediterranean-influenced architecture, and tile roofing is everywhere. It fits the aesthetic, sure. But it’s also genuinely well-suited to this climate in ways that go beyond how it looks.

That said, tile roofing has real requirements. Structural requirements the home has to meet. Cost that’s significantly higher upfront than asphalt. Installation demands that leave very little margin for error. If you’re seriously considering it, the more you understand before you start getting quotes, the better position you’re in.

What Makes Tile Work So Well in This Climate

Clay and concrete tiles don’t do what asphalt shingles do in heat. They don’t warp. They don’t crack from UV exposure. They don’t shed surface material over years of Texas summers. The material is essentially inert against the things that wear out most roofing products.

Tile also has thermal mass, which means it absorbs heat slowly during the day and releases it slowly as temperatures drop. On a south-facing roof during an August afternoon in San Antonio, that buffering effect is real and it keeps the attic from spiking as dramatically as it would under asphalt.

Clay vs. Concrete: What’s the Actual Difference

Clay is the original. Fired ceramic, very durable, a surface finish that weathers attractively rather than degrading. A well-installed clay tile roof can go 50 to 100 years. It’s heavier than concrete and it costs more.

Concrete tile is the more affordable option and does a convincing impression of clay visually. It’s actually slightly heavier per unit but handles hail impact better, since clay can crack under a hard hit. Concrete tile runs 30 to 50 years under normal Texas conditions, which is still a significant improvement over asphalt by any measure.

Both come in barrel, flat, and S-curve profiles. Barrel is the classic curved style you picture on Spanish-style architecture. Flat and S-curve profiles read more contemporary. The profile affects drainage and appearance. Worth discussing with your contractor which works best for your specific roof geometry.

What It Costs and How to Actually Think About That

Tile runs two to four times the per-square-foot cost of asphalt at installation. That number stops a lot of conversations right there.

But here’s what that number doesn’t include. A properly installed clay tile roof on a suitable home can last the life of the structure. 60, 70, 80 years with basic maintenance, mainly annual inspections and replacing the occasional cracked tile. Compare that to two or three asphalt replacements over the same period, each with its own labor and material costs, and the per-year math gets a lot closer than the upfront price comparison suggests.

The Structural Check Is Not Optional

This is the one thing you absolutely cannot skip.

Tile is heavy. Significantly heavier per square foot than asphalt or metal. The framing and roof deck have to be rated to handle that load before anything goes on. Most homes built in the last 25 to 30 years are fine. Older homes and homes that were never designed with tile in mind sometimes need reinforcement first.

A contractor who doesn’t bring up the structural assessment before quoting the job is either not thinking about it or not planning to do it. Ask directly if it’s not mentioned. Installing tile on framing that can’t support it is a problem that may not surface for years and will be very expensive to address when it does.
